The Austrian Science and Research Liaison Office (ASRLO) has offices in Brno, Ljubljana, and Sofia. The office offers support for scientists from Austria, Slovenia, and other countries of South Eastern Europe (SEE). Its main research interests are socio-economic transformation processes, national minorities, and the utilisation of modern information and telecommunication technologies in SEE. ASRLO Ljubljana facilitates and co-funds cross-border cooperation, co-organises scientific events and advises the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research on SEE. It has also published several books, including Austria-Slovenia: Past and Present (2002, in Slovenian).

Each year ASRLO issues several calls for academic research proposals. The most recent one addressed the "Changing Identities in South Eastern Europe: Between Europeanisation, Globalisation, Regionalisation and Nationalism" and 6 joint projects by various SEE academic institutions were selected.

Background

The branch office in Ljubljana was at first a branch of the Austrian Institute of East and South East European Studies. In March 2004 the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research appointed the Centre of Social Innovation (ZSI) in Vienna to take over the Ljubljana and Sofia Institutes. The office in Ljubljana moved from the Faculty of Arts to the International Centre for the Promotion of Enterprises.
