V-F-X Ljubljana

The international festival of experimental audiovisual practices V-F-X Ljubljana (Video-Film-Experiment) was launched in 2021 by SCCA-Ljubljana Centre for Contemporary Arts and the Slovenian Cinematheque.

The creation of a new festival dedicated to experimental and avant-garde audio-visual practices was spurred by the need to acknowledge and celebrate groundbreaking AV creations within experimental environments. Rather than starting from scratch, this festival builds upon the foundations laid by numerous exceptional directors, videographers, and artists who have a rich history of experimentation in this field. The festival's aim is to showcase experiences and practices from around the globe, including international platforms, festivals, and programs dedicated to experimental work. It emphasizes both the past and the future, with the goal of uncovering curators, programs, films, videos, installations, and performances that transcend established and classical boundaries, exploring new avenues of expression and utilization of the medium.

International Triennial Ecology and Art

The International Triennial Ecology and Art (ECO Triennial) was established in 1980 by Maribor Art Gallery. Addressing environmental issues first as a topic and later on contextualising them in terms of ecology and social change, this triennial has been organised regularly till 2006. The gallery reconceptualised the event and the next triennial took place in spring 2021 in the complex of the former MTT textile factory in Maribor. Under the title A Letter to the Future its main exhibition was curated by Alessandro Vincentelli (UK, Greece). EKO 8 was accompanied by a vast discursive programme, focused on the city and the urban community and realised in co-operation with the Centre for Creativity and Igor Zabel Association for Culture and Theory as partners, and building on the institutional network in the city itself.

The 9th International Triennial Ecology and Art Eyes in the Stone will take place between 17th May and 27th July 2024 in The Old Sanatorium in Maribor.

Overview

Fields of Experimental Music in Slovenia

Luka T. Zagoričnik

Let's take a ride on the term experimental music, which currently mainly defines certain more fringe musical practices, across the expanses of various musical plains, styles and genres. We can apply this (overly) broad term to designate the varied creative simmering in certain segments of the present-day Slovenian music scene. A scene that spans the realms of electro-acoustic music, musique concrète, experimental music in the context of modern classical music, free improvisation, experimental electronic music and sound art as well as their associated present-day trends. This scene is diverse and exceptionally agile. It has developed a strong infrastructure for itself (festivals, concert series, labels, international networks) and exists in the space between self-organising and DIY models and institutional environments.
