Abstract

When the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations joined the Yugoslav union for the second time after 1945 it also became member of the AIAP/IAA and remained a member until the independence of Slovenia in 1991, when it received a status of the observer. The Union engages in the conception and implementation of various exhibitions and artistic events at home and abroad, and in the creation and publication of artists’ books and catalogues. Its secretariat monitors the regulation of legal acts concerning the status of visual artists in Slovenia and co-operates accordingly with the Ministry of Culture, which is also the main funder of the Union's programmes. It currently has 10 regional associations which represent approximately 650 individual members.

The Union runs its own gallery, the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU) Gallery, where it organises individual and smaller group exhibitions, presentations of graphic portfolios and various cycles. It organises the annual May Salon exhibition of its members' work and the Biennial of Slovene Book Illustration. It also bestows the Hinko Smrekar Award, the May Salon Award and the Rihard Jakopič Award.

International networking has involved INTART, Kunstverein fűr Kärtnen, Austria; Associazione Centro Friulano Arti Plastiche, Italy; BBK Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, Germany; HDLU, HDLUZ, Germany; Konstaerenas Rijksoerganisation, Stockholm, Sweden; AAPM Madrid, Spain; Cite des Arts International, Paris, France; the Kunststation Kleinsassen in Germany; and the Voipaala Art Centre in Finland.
