The Slovene Film Fund (SFF) supports Slovene film production and post production and organises film festivals and film awards.

History

A public fund, the Slovene Film Fund (SFF) was established in 1994 by the state for the purpose of implementing the national cultural programme in the sphere of film.

Programme

The majority of current Slovene film production is facilitated by the Fund. The Fund seeks to encourage long-term planning and facilitates film production co-funded by the national budget; monitors the work and public expenditure of producers participating in the national film programme; collects proposals for the co-funding of film programmes and projects by means of public tenders and in accordance with legislation and regulations which define procedures for the approval of public tenders; signs contracts on the co-funding of programmes and projects with approved producers; and facilitates the presentation and marketing of Slovene film, both at home and abroad. It also promotes the development of scriptwriting; plans and implements co-operation with foreign non-governmental film associations; promotes the development of film post-production as a cultural activity; follows conditions in the cinema network and, if necessary, adopts and carries out measures to rectify or improve them; encourages the production and distribution of art films; and carries out various other tasks connected with film in Slovenia.

The Slovene Film Fund gathers proposals for the co-funding of film programmes and projects by means of public tenders and in accordance with legislation and regulations which define procedures for the approval of public tenders. It signs contracts on the co-funding of programmes and projects with approved producers and facilitates the presentation and marketing of Slovene film at home and abroad. Among its tasks is the promotion of scriptwriting development.

Each year the Fund organises a public competition for feature-length fiction films, short fiction films, documentary films and animation films (eg in June xxx for the period xxxx). Initially a small amount of money is assigned to selected producers to develop the financial and technical structures of their projects, shooting scripts or screenplays, then the projects are realised according to the proposed financial schedule. There is also an annual public competition for events, meetings and educational projects in the field of cinematography. A pre-selection for financial support is made by expert programme committees, while the final decision is made by a Supervisory Board. Proposals for the financing or co-financing of programmes or projects in the field of cinematography from public funds may be submitted by individuals and legal entities entered in the Register of Creators of Cultural Programmes at the ministry competent for culture. A film producer not registered for the performance of film production activities in the Republic of Slovenia may shoot films in the Republic of Slovenia in collaboration with a Slovene producer.

Legislation on the Slovene Film Fund and General Terms and Conditions of Performance of the Film Fund of the Republic of Slovenia - a Public Fund is available in English at the SFF website.

The SFF's web page presents a catalogue of film authors, films, festivals, awards, co-productions, VHS sales, etc in English, German and Spanish.
